AT&T to Show Off Standards-Based 5G in Austin

AT&T has just been awarded an experimental radio license by the FCC to test standards-based 5G in the convention center in Austin, Texas, from the end of July.

Seeking a competitive edge over its cable and telco rivals, AT&T continues to extend its all-fiber footprint to deliver high-speed broadband and lay the groundwork for launching 5G services in a dozen markets before the end of the year.

On Thursday, AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) launched 1 Gig service in South Bend, Ind., boosting its total FTTH reach to 71 metro regions throughout the US. Besides offering 1 Gig service to residential customers, AT&T is also providing ultra-fast broadband to commercial customers through its Business Fiber program.

The carrier quietly raised its “administrative fee,” a tiny line item at the bottom of monthly bills, to $1.99 from 76 cents, BTIG Research analyst Walter Piecyk noticed on Wednesday.

It’s official: DOL fiduciary rule is dead

After a long delay, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals confirmed Thursday a March decision to strike down the Labor Department’s fiduciary rule.

The court issued a mandate making effective the March 15 split decision that vacated the agency’s regulation. The court majority held that the agency exceeded its authority in promulgating the rule, which would have required brokers to act in the best interests of clients in retirement accounts.




AT&T Buckles Down to Deploy NB-IoT in 2019

AT&T now says it will deploy Narrow Band-IoT (NB-IoT) to support extremely low-power LTE machine-to-machine (M2M) communications, after extensive testing — and some whiffling — on the 4G specification.

AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) said Wednesday that it plans to launch NB-IoT on its network in the US early in 2019, with Mexico following later in the year. The upgrade will be implemented via a software upgrade on the network.
